Google Search Grows Hands [AI Platform/Search]
For most of the internet’s history, Google Search had one main job: point you somewhere useful. You typed a question, Google ranked the web, and you clicked your way toward an answer. At Google I/O, that job started to change. Google I/O is the company’s annual developer conference, where Google shows developers, partners, and the market where its products are heading next. This year, Search sat near the center of Google’s “agentic Gemini era.”
AI Mode is Google Search redesigned for longer, messier questions. It can respond conversationally, handle follow-ups, compare options, and help structure a task. Links helped you find. AI Overviews helped you summarize. AI Mode starts helping you decide and act. Search is becoming less about typing the perfect query and more about handing over messy context: a question, a photo, a file, a tab, or a half-formed plan.
The personal layer is the real unlock. Google says AI Mode can connect with Gmail and Google Photos, with Calendar coming soon, and users choose if and when to connect those apps. With permission, Search can stop treating every query as a blank slate. Gmail could surface bookings, receipts, plans, or old threads. Photos could add visual memory. Calendar could add timing. Search can move from “What are good hotels in Chicago?” to “What hotels fit the conference dates in my email, the gaps in my calendar, and the kinds of neighbourhoods I seemed to like on past trips?” Useful, and a little intimate. The same context that makes Search more helpful also gives it more influence over what feels relevant.
The web’s basic bargain starts to shift. The old internet funnel ran on the click: users searched, compared, visited, and decided. If AI Search can summarize, personalize, compare, and eventually help act before a user ever leaves Google, the game moves from visibility to selection. Businesses may need to ask less “How do we rank higher?” and more “Can an AI system understand us well enough to recommend us?” The new SEO may look less like keyword stuffing and more like making a business easy for machines to verify: clear product data, accurate hours, structured pricing, reviews, policies, availability, and trusted signals. For professionals, the skill shifts from collecting sources to challenging the synthesis: what did the system assume, what did it ignore, and which source would I still inspect myself? Google is improving Search while defending the most valuable real estate on the internet: the moment before someone decides.

What is an Agentic Interface? [AI concept]
An agentic interface is where AI stops living inside a chat box and starts living inside the task. It helps understand your goal, break that goal into steps, and move the work forward. A chatbot lives in the conversation. An agentic interface lives inside the workflow.
Picture preparing for a client meeting. A chatbot can help, especially with saved memory or access to past context. The user still has to drive: find the last email thread, summarize the client history, identify open issues, draft talking points, adjust the tone, turn it into an agenda. Each prompt nudges the output in a different direction. The tool helps, but the process still depends on the user knowing what to ask next.
An agentic interface knows more of the job’s shape. Meeting prep means checking the calendar invite, pulling recent emails, finding related documents, spotting unresolved questions, drafting an agenda, and suggesting next steps inside the product where the meeting already lives. Models can now handle more context, use tools, and move across connected apps instead of sitting inside one isolated chat window. Agentic does not mean fully autonomous. It means the system can carry a task across steps, ideally within clear limits.
The power comes from filling in the blanks. So does the risk. The system may infer which files matter, which messages are relevant, what your usual preferences are, and what a “good next step” looks like. The more an interface learns your defaults, the more convenient it becomes, and the more invisible its influence gets. Search fits this shift because people rarely arrive with perfectly formed questions. They arrive with intent: “Best laptop for travel,” “How should I prepare for this meeting,” “Where should we stay in Rome?” These are unfinished decisions disguised as searches. Agentic interfaces are built for that messy middle. They help shape the task, but the new skill is deciding where the pause button belongs.
Curiosity in Clicks
Try this with Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or another AI tool you use:
“I’m planning a three-day work trip to Chicago in July. Help me choose where to stay. Use a clear decision process, include tradeoffs, and tell me what you would do next if you had access to my email, calendar, photos, and browser.”
Watch the boundary. A basic answer may list hotels or neighbourhoods. A stronger one will structure the decision around location, budget, schedule, transportation, preferences, and tradeoffs. An agentic one will start pointing toward actions: checking your calendar, reading confirmation emails, comparing prices, drafting an itinerary, holding options, or preparing a booking.
Then ask: Which parts of this should you be allowed to do automatically, and which parts should require my approval? AI should not do everything it can do. Every useful agent needs a pause button. Let it research, compare, summarize, and prepare. Slow it down before money, messages, records, reputation, or personal data are involved. The question should shift from “Can AI help me?” to “Where do I want the system to stop and ask first?”
