Is AI making our lives better yet?

This week, we take a step back and reflect as we approach the one-year mark of this newsletter.

As we get close to the one-year mark of this newsletter, one question keeps coming back: is artificial intelligence actually improving our lives?

There is more personalized content designed to hold attention, more targeted ads, less typing, more polished presentations and conversations, some level of enterprise efficiency, and AI-powered tools for everyday use. These developments suggest broad impact, though much of that impact is still hard to see.

Let’s start with one area that has a direct impacts on all of us: Healthcare. In medical imaging, AI is changing how diseases are detected. In breast cancer screening, studies show AI-supported systems can reduce radiologist workload by over 40 percent while maintaining similar detection rates, with some trials pointing to earlier identification. For patients, the experience remains familiar, while the system underneath is shifting. In screening and access, the impact becomes more visible. In a randomized controlled trial for diabetic eye disease, screening rates in the AI-supported group approached full coverage, compared to just over 20 percent in standard care, with follow-up care improving as well.

On the research side, the changes are more pronounced. Systems like AlphaFold have predicted over 200 million protein structures, helping researchers understand how diseases form and design more targeted drugs, work that would have taken years through traditional lab methods. These advances improve how quickly diseases are detected and studied, with much of the progress happening inside systems, labs, and workflows, strengthening the foundation of healthcare while the experience of receiving care changes more gradually.

A similar pattern appears in other sectors. In agriculture, AI helps reduce chemical use, optimize water, and improve yield. Resource management improves, while the consumer experience remains largely the same. Food is not dramatically cheaper or more accessible in the near term.

In many industries, the gains show up most clearly in efficiency. Developers complete tasks faster. Customer operations handle more requests with greater consistency. Teachers spend less time on preparation while students gain on-demand support. Across enterprises, teams generate content, summarize information, write code, and automate workflows more quickly. These improvements are easier to measure and integrate into existing systems, while broader outcomes take longer to emerge and often require deeper changes.

Much of AI’s value add shows up more quietly. It appears as time saved, effort reduced, or access expanded. These gains reshape how work gets done before they reshape what we experience, with a natural time lag as capabilities are developed, embedded into systems, and gradually reach individuals. Much of this progress moves through systems before it shows up in lived experience.

What that saved time translates into is less straightforward. In some cases, it creates space. In many cases, it increases output, accelerates response times, and expands capacity. Systems become more productive, though those gains tend to accumulate within organizations and workflows before they reach individuals or broader outcomes.

This leads to a broader question. It is less about whether Artificial Intelligence is improving individual tasks, and more about how those improvements accumulate. Systems are becoming faster, more capable, and more productive. The direction of progress is clear. The impact is already visible in systems, and the question is how far it travels.

Where that progress ultimately lands is still being shaped, and that depends on where these gains are applied and who they reach.
